Psychological Safety & Ground Truth

First-timer fears & unwritten rules.

Most freshmen and transfer students never rush simply because nobody explained the basics. Here is the unvarnished truth about Greek life at VCU.

👕 What should I actually wear?

IFC cookouts & MGC showcases: Clean casual (everyday jeans, sneakers, casual tees). Don’t overdress for backyard burgers.
CPC Formal Sorority Recruitment: Progression from casual campus wear for Open House, to business casual for Sisterhood round, to dresses/jumpsuits for Preference round.
NPHC Informational Sessions: Business professional (suit, tie, tailored slacks, or professional dress). Strict business attire is traditional for Divine Nine informationals.

💸 How much does Greek life cost?

Semester dues typically range from $150 to $700 depending on the council and chapter size. Dues cover national insurance, philanthropy events, formals, and leadership conferences.

Pro-tip: Nearly every chapter offers installment payment plans, and national alumni funds provide need-based scholarships. Ask chapter treasurers directly—it’s completely normal.

👥 Can I show up with a friend or roommate?

100% yes. Over 80% of freshmen attend SOVO Fair, Compass yard showcases, and IFC cookouts with a roommate or dorm floor friend. Showing up in pairs cuts social anxiety in half and chapters love meeting friend groups.

🎓 Can I join as a sophomore, junior, or transfer?

Absolutely. VCU is an urban campus with thousands of transfer and non-traditional students. Mature students who bring work ethic, leadership, and diverse perspectives are actively recruited across all four councils.

🛡️ What is VCU’s anti-hazing policy?

VCU enforces strict zero-tolerance under Virginia’s Adam’s Law. All potential new members must complete VCU’s Hazing Prevention training module on Canvas before accepting an official bid. Anonymous reporting is available 24/7 through VCU Student Conduct.

📱 What if I don’t get a bid?

Not receiving a bid in the fall is never the end of the road. Many houses conduct Continuous Open Bidding (COB) or Spring Rush. Often students find an even better fit the following semester after discovering new chapters on campus.
